Simon,

I tend to argee, cavalry often approached squares in column of squadrons, each sqaudron went in a little ahead of the other, hopefully finding a weak point or intimidating the square sufficiently that it would lose its tight formation and allow the cavalry to close up and break in.
If the square remained formed and maintained its fire discipline the squadron would wheel away prior to contact and reform, if possible, on the rest of the regiment.
Though there were always, it seems, one or two isolated brave (or reckless?) souls who went in for the close up hacking and often paid the price for their indulgence.
