The way I see him, he is an old, long serving officer and his commanding officer has allowed him to keep his facial hair and mitre in regards to his bravery in earlier campaigns. How does that sound?

In my little book, Uniforms of 1812; Napoleon's Retreat from Moscow, by Phillip Haythornwaite, on Plate 59 there is a "Company Officer, Grenadier Regt Pavlovski, full dress, 1813," wearing the "archaic regimental brass-fronted mitre" and he has a mustache!
