The reading materials in my possession suggest that the Fusilier Grenadiers and the Fusilier Chaussers were created in 1806 , each with two battalions of four companies each. So far so good. The same materials suggest that the Fusilier Chaussers totalled 1200 whereas the Fusilier Grenadiers totalled 1800. This would make the Fusilier Grenadier companies one third bigger than the Fusilier Chausser companies. This seems odd. Is the 1800 figure correct? Or did the Fusilier Grenadiers have a third battalion? Can anyone help with this?

With thanks in advance.

Not very high brow I'm afraid. Osprey/Men at Arms 160 page 7 and Histoire & Collections 3 "The French Imperial Guard" pages 4 & 41. The information given by both is remarkably similar but the 1800 figure doesn't seem right to me.

I've just re-read your post. The 1800 figure was for the Fusiliers-Grenadiers not the Fusiliers-Chasseurs.

Thanks.

fusilier chasseurs/grenadiers

According to "Armies on the Denube" by Scot Bowden the Fusilier Grenadiers had at Wagram 1.064 men (2 batt), the fusilier chasseurs 1.089 men in 2 bat. So almost the same strength

Thanks for that. At Aspern-Essling the Fusilier-Grenadiers had two battalions totalling 1,313 men and the Fusilier-Chasseurs had two battalions totalling 1,272 men. The 1800 figure given by Philip Haythornthwaite and Andre Jouineau must be wrong.

The query originated from Sir Charles Oman's Order of Battle for Medina de Rioseco in 1808 which refers to a detachment of La Garde Imperiale of three battalions of the 1er Fusiliers totalling 1900 men. The Fusilier-Chasseurs were formed on 19th October 1806 and the Fusilier-Grenadiers were formed on 15 December 1806. Which one was the 1er Fusiliers?

fusileers

According to "Foot regiments of the Imperial Guard"by Michael Head the fusileers chasseurs were raised october 19, 1806; the fusileer-grenadiers december 15, 1806. So the chasseurs would be the first.
Also is stated that the fus-chasseurs comprised 2 battallions, each 4 companies for a total regimental strenth of 1200 men. No strength is given for the fus grenadiers but I suppose they are the same.
Mentioned is, that in 1811 each batt received a 5th company (called fusiliers-sergeants) and in december 1813 a 6th company was added to each battalion.
With 6 companies in each battalion (and each company probably the same strenth as the first companies namely 150) the theoretical strenth of the regiment would be 1800 men. Maybe the mentioned strenth comes from this.

And for good measure! I came across this return for the Imperial Guard in Northern Spain for 15th January 1812:

Brigade de Fusiliers :
Fusiliers-Chasseurs : Colonel Vrigny.
1er Bat : Daccantel. (20 ; 521)
2ème Bat : [?] (15 ; 501)
Fusiliers-Grenadiers : Colonel Bodelin.
1er Bat : [?] (18 ; 561)
2ème Bat : Vionnet. (12 ; 54

So it is two battalions each. Glad we sorted that out!
