Wondering if anyone can identify the cast of characters in this "famous" painting by Vasily Vereshchagin, Napoleon I on the Borodino Heights.

I believe its the source of inspiration the Perrys used for the Wargames Foundry FN 327 pack.

Well, the guy on the left of the painting is Napoleon ; - )

But, seriously, I have this Foundry set and have posed them as closely as I can to this painting, though within the confines of a coaster-sized base (see picture below).

The actual figures are all identified in the Foundry catalogue, but it would be a little difficult to translate those IDs to exact figures in the painting, as the poses, whilst similar, are not quite the same.

The figures in the Foundry set are identified as the Emperor (of course), and clustered behind him are some of his marshals, including Berthier and his ADC in hussar uniform, Mortier, Grouchy, Victor and Ney (whose red hair can be clearly seen on the left of my figures). Also depicted are Roustan, Napoleon's personal Mameluke aide, various ADCs, and a Chasseur a Cheval standing guard.

Thanks for the keystrokes. Appreciate you taking the time.

I had a copy of your grouping already on my harddrive. What size base did you get them all to fit on? (Coaster size =4" ?)

I have the new Foundry compendium and 2 of the small catalogues (Victoriana and Ancients) unfortunately I don't have the Napoleonic catalogue and I haven't see it come up often on ebay.

If your catalogue is handy would it be possible to fill in the blanks from the Foundry catalogue.

A=
b=
c=
d= Chasseur a Cheval standing guard
e= Napoleon
image
f= Roustan
g=
h=
i=
j=
k=
l= Ney

Again thanks Roly. Once identified I can figure out the uniform details/colours and get on with the painting.

Are there any online French OoB for Borodino?

The Foundry catalogue lists the figures as:

Napoleon (you should be able to sort him out!);

Roustan (likewise as above);

Berthier (officer holding telescope downwards, no cloak);

Victor (officer holding telescope downwards, with cloak);

Grouchy (officer with map);

Ney (bare-headed officer, pointing at map);

Mortier (officer looking through telescope);

Savary (ADC to Napoleon, with bare head holding out letter);

Imperial Orderly Officer (officer holding hilt of sword);

ADC (hussar style uniform, pointing);

Staff Assistant (holding despatch case under arm);

Chasseur a Cheval of the Guard.

Hope that helps you!
