Have been looking through the OB for Saguntum to use as a basis for my Spaniards (Lardizibal and Zayas brigades, Loys cav) who also fought at Albuerha (sp?). I want to collect a force around 1810-11, before British supplied uniforms were widely used.

I think that I have tracked down the origin and type of most units to then link them to the appropriate figure type (AB and some Fantassin) by using Oman, Embelton, Haythornthwaite, Lachoque, Elting, Osprey #2. Three questions still elude me however:

ï‚· Hussars de Castille – this is a newly raised regt, but cannot find any uniform details. I assume a hussar-style dress, but colours?;
ï‚· Guards Uniforms – by 1810-11, what type of uniform would they have worn;
ï‚· Can I justify still using 1808 style uniforms for at least some of the old line regts in 1810-11, or should they be in shakos etc The three regts that I am referring to are Africa, Toledo and Murcia.

Many thanks for any assistance.

John as to the question about 1808 uniforms still in use i could argue that units assigned to the british divisions and later corp would probaly be equipped and in british supplied uniforms but due to the still deplorable state of the spanish logistical system and the requiremnt of regiemntal commanders to supply their own regiments uniforms in the spanish regualr army i figure you can get away with it, i would hardly guess that replacement of unifmrs was high on the list with everything else in shoratge, the impression i get from memoirs and leters form some of the officers presant and the research by esdale, oman and napier gives the distinction of little unforms apperance and though oman and napier could be argued as biased in some sense esdale presnets i feel a more unbiased view and his appraisal of the spanish army and it ability to supply and equip units is highly critical even more so that the british in the early stages of the war. I figure that the three regiements in question might still be easily feiled in the old uniforms i don't think they served with the british formations but i havn't looked so might be wrong but i would still figure that use of the "british" uniform was not wide spread. Haythornwaite suggests in one of his books that it was not universal but then no specific refence to your three regiements.

there it is a little mesy in delivery but its 12.30 am and i'm tired and thats all i can remeber
hope that helps

cheers

Toledo are certainly shown in brown by 1811 (see Osprey #2). I don't have my Bueno book here, so not sure about the hussars. The book on Spanish hussars has several other regts, but unfortunately only mentions the Castilla in a table.
Isn't there a reference to a parade in around 1810 in Oman where the Spanish infantry uniforms are described. Again, Oman isn't here for me to check.
I'll see what I can find after the w/e.

I can't remember off hand - and I may have a false memory of it! I think it is around 1810-11 as I haven't read much further than that. Books are elsewhere, but I'll see if I can dig it up.
