So after a year back into wargaming, i finally get round to my first love ---- Napoleonics --- i've drifted thru Dark Ages; LotR; Vampire Wars; DBA Ancients and WotR.............but let's get down to the serious business !!!

I've decided to build French and Austrian armies, loosely based upon 1809.

My question is simple...........to have a decent game of GdB, what is the optimum size of an army ............... i'm talking proportions of infantry; cavalry and artillery.............. e.g if i paint 12 inf battalions, what is a good proportion of cavalry and artillery

on that note i will go to bed and look forward to your advice

regards

ian

The beauty of the rules is that they play well with a brigade up to multiple corps level. As for the composition of your army, I would suggest you simply base it on OOB from whichever army you choose to paint. You will then get the correct balance of Infantry, Artillary and Cavalry.
This is the only set of rules I have played where I don't have the urge to tinker with the rules, the command and control element plays fantastically well (especially for larger games).

For 12bns:
Max of two cav - best if quite small units (c.18 figs) and light cav rather than heavy or lancer.
One or two art batteries (one possibly horse).

I'd prefer to have perhaps 15 or 16 inf bns, but 12 would be okay.
