New to G de B and rebasing both French and British Line and Legere/Light Bns. So far I have only done French Line in 36 and 30 fig Bns 6X6 and 6X5 the Volt are on split bases of 2X3 and 1X3,1X2. Simple and straight forward. The light Bns are more problematic for me. I will start with the French and follow along with the British in a similar fashion. As I read the rules the Light Bns can only deploy 1/2 of their Co. in skirmish order. For the French 3 (6 Co. Bn.) For the Brits 5. As I have started with sp;it bases for the Volt. in the Line Bns. I would like to do something similar with the light units. I would like to have the feel of extended skirmishers but not make the game too tedious with a bunch of split bases for the French. The Brits being smaller Co. size I dont see as being as much of a problem. I know I can do what ever I want but I am seeking some insight here from others who have been at the rules for a while. By the way I am wearing the blue shirt in bandersntch's Maida refight photos. Mitch I think you beter check those dice there is one set that only has one two and three dots.

Personally I've done the following

95th rifles 36 figures on 6 bases of 6, and 36 figures in ones and two's

1/52nd and 1/43rd both big battalions with 48 figures , 8 bases of 6, and 24 figures skirmishing in ones and two's

French Light battalions 36 figures, 6 bases of 6, and 18 figures skirmishing in ones and two's (the carabinier and voltigeur companies and one centre company.

I include a couple of officers on the skirmish line then you can also use them for skirmish games, which was all i could do initially whilst starting to build up my forces...

I recently completed a Baden jager battalion. I have no problem doing skirmishing figs for LI coys within line battalions, but draw the line at replicating whole or half battalions as Simon has so bravely done.

The jager battalion consisted of 5 x 5 fig coys. I did two coys in MA poses with 5 figs on each base, then three coys with three skirmishing figs on each. This was the battalion when ‘formed’ (ie no skirmishers).

I also painted 3 x 2 skir figs in normal skir bases.

Total figs painted where 2 x 5 = 10, 3 x 3=9 and 3 x 2 = 6, a total of 25, the actual strength of the battalion.

When I wanted to deploy skirmishers, I would take each of the three skirm company (of 3 figs each) and then add one of the two fig skirm bases, making a total of five figs skirmishing. Multiply this by the two others of each type and you have the two formed coys behind a skirmish screen on three coys totalling 15 figs.

The drawback is that, when formed, your battalion looks a bit skinny with the 3 x 5 bases at the back, but it works very well when deployed. For light battalion it’s an idea worth considering.

Finding myself woefully lacking in either Ramsearch's valour in painting extra figs or John's mathematical genius I resorted to the following with my French lights.

I based in threes single rank on close order bases which means I can have them both in close order and in skirmish order. This options means 12 bases and you might(and quite reasonably too) think that it would be too incovenient to move around but I found it preferable spending a few more seconds moving a battalion around, than going for any of the alternatives. Complete versatility in terms of using your figures comes at a price I am afraid

I woul;d also suggest that you could reduce the need for duplicates if you work on a 1:4 ratio-I think it is unlikely that you will need to deploy every Legere/Light bat you are fielding in skirmish order in a battle

Theo, do you use close order bases for your line Volt.? The scheme appeals to me as I dont paint as fast as I used to. No offense Ramcsearch but I would rather field an additional unit than figures that I may use infrequently. If I read John correctly, his scheme is similar to Theo's only he has based the "required" half Bn as close order and the other half as skirmishers. I think my compromise would be to base half of the Bn as close order 6 figure bases (3x6) and the other half on slpit (half depth) bases of close order order width (6x3). This way the unit will look good when formed in close order and the skirmishers will appear correct when deployed in front of the parent unit. If it looks good I may shorten the bases on the line Volt. that I have already based on extended width bases. My thanks to all who have posted. Where else can you get advice from around the world.

yep Tony, I do indeed. My line battalions' voltigeurs are based single rank on close order bases.

So for example in a French line battalion(I use 10mm frontage for each foot figure and 15mm depth- I do it for ease of basing- you may well choose to allow smaller measurements per fig within the parameters given by the rules; in any case the basing rationale will be the same) I will have:

a)Four 30x30 bases of Fusiliers- each one has 6 figures in two ranks, 3 in the front and 3 in the back

b)One 30x30 base of Grenadiers- again this carries 6 Grenadier figures in two ranks same as above

c)Two 30x15 bases of Voltigeurs- each base has 3 figures single rank.

oh forgot to say that your idea to do your lights half and half will work just fine. Especially so after Dr Brown revised the rule for Grande Bandes whereby only 50% of the battalion can deploy in Grande Bandes(for more info on this http://generaldebrigade.13.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=1563&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15 )

Grande bandes... ? Aren't they the stands with all the musicians in ?

Not painted anything for 5 whole days, getting withdrawl symptoms, been in a field slowly boiling in an army uniform.
