Query arose this afternoon whilst playing the Raevsky Redoubt scenario. Actually is is 2 queries, but arising from the same incident. The situation is that on the far eastern flank the French player has deployed his reserve 12lb battery and started to shoot up the filthy Ruskis. The Russian player counters by sending forward the Cossack regt. After a circuitous route it is now east of the French battery and announces a charge. Now Cossacks can't charge frontally any formed troops, but what constitutes frontally, or a flank ? There isn't a definition under charges or melees, only under firing. Under this definition had the cossacks been firing they would have been allowed the enfilade. The cossacks are within charge reach, in good order and deployed in 2 lines, but if they move straight forward they will miss the battery by a couple of cm. If they deviate by the allowed 22 degrees they will contact with their extreme right (westmost) base about 2/3rds of the way down the extreme left (eastmost) gun model. We allowed the charge, but only after a decent discussion and a dice throw. The majority of the cossack unit would have been on the French battery's front had the twin lines as per the enfilade definition been drawn out. My initial arguement was that the majority of the cossacks were to the front, so it wasn't a flank charge, but plainly the enfilade sketch (pg 32) went against me. Anyone had anything similar, or any other views on what would constitute a flank for cossacks ?

That was the first query, the second arises out of the subsequent melee, and is rather easier to imagine - do artillery count as foot in melee with cavalry, and so count only half their figures ? The example given says foot on 1 line and infantry on the next (pg 39 note 2 after the modifiers table). And do you count this during the melee itself for the outnumbering factor. My battery was 16 figures strong, against a cossack regt of 18 figures. If, as we did, you count it as 8 figures then the cossacks get an additional +2 as they get 2 50% increments. Is this the right way to do it ? Gary

Hi gary
To answer the second part of your question .
The artillery crews will count as if they are Foot/Infantry(The word means the same in the rules) and will therefore only count half their figures they will also suffer a get -2 for being artillery and as you say the -2 for outnumbering
