Eclaireur and all you Prussophiles -
Since full sized Prussian battalions would be about 40 figs, 'typical' bns in the rules and scenarios are 32 figs and some are 24 figs, I was wondering how you had based your figs. Do you use
a) the 'correct' four companies of 10, 8 or 6 figs
b) the flexible cop-out with each base having 8 figs, but using either 3 , 4 or 5 bases as required. This allows flexibility for use in various circs, but does it lose something in the translation.
Just curiious really, as I'm about to start basing.

Hi Swampy,

I always go for a 'standard' size, depending on the nationality and period (32 figs on four company bases in the case of Prussians) and just alter the unit roster according to the scenario - a slight discrepancy in frontage doesn't matter a bugger really. My 32s regularly 'stand in' for 40s or 24s (or occasionally hyper-accurate 27s, 31s, etc, depending on the scenario).

You can always use the argument that as units became smaller due to attrition, the third rank would be used to fill out the first and second ranks to maintain the frontage.

Cheers,

Mark

Swampster, I'm re-basing a collection I bought recently which was based for 1:60, I am having Grenadier and Musketeer battalions as 32's (actually 30 foot figs and a mounted officer)but doing the fusilier battalions on the same sized bases but using 24 foot figures and a mounted officer. This is one base of "8", actually the mounted officer and 6 foot figures, then three bases each of 6. All the fusiliers are in skirmishing poses. Looks good when deployed out as a skirmish line, and ok when used together. This is a DCR idea from an early thread on basing skirmishers, and I have to say I think it works well. I am also a convert to the idea that units would sacrifice depth to maintain their frontage, so I concur with Mark, keep it standard for the toys and alter the roster sheets, Merry Christmas to all, Gary
