"Long, Obstinate, and Bloody; The Battle of Guilford Courthouse" by Lawrence Babits and Joshua Howard

I recieved this book in the mail this week. The authors claim to offer the first (or best) detailed account of the actual battle of Guilford. I wanted to read some of the book before mentioning it here. One thing I have been looking for in AWI literature is a detailed account of the sharp-end of AWI battle. Most books available over here offer very well written campaign accounts and only short chapters on the actual fighting, looking at the big picture, so to speak. Well this book has proven to be everything it claims to be. I am a third of the way through the book and the British attack on the first line is just starting. After a couple of very good chapters on the campaign leading up to the battle and two chapters covering the American and British armies and their deployment, the remainder of the book is going to cover the actual combat and aftermath of the battle. I can't put the darn book down.

The two authors are both scholars from NC (Babits also wrote "Devil of a Whipping" about Camden). The amount of detail for both sides is impressive.

I give it 5 cannon balls! 00000

I'm hoping my copy arrives tomorrow. I had pre-ordered on Amazon UK but that wouldn't have arrived until end of month so I cancelled and re-ordered from Caliver, rapidly becoming my military book supplier of choice!

Have heard good things about Long, Obstinate... and really enjoyed Cowpens too, so looking forward to finding time at the weekend to blitz through it.

And maybe finally paint the Guards units I need for Guilford!

I, too, am looking forward to receiving this.

Be aware that there is an accompanying errata sheet - if you look at the relevant thread on the "18th Century Books" forum on PMT, you'll find an email address from which to obtain it.

How are there errata already if it's only just now hitting the shelves? Did they rush the book to press?

Then let us fill a bumper, and drink a health to those
Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the loup'ed clothes.

Hello,
GCH is the only one of the AWI Ospreys missing from my bookshelf; so this is very appealing. Thanks for the tip-off.
The 'blurb' on the Foyles site looks good BUT, both Foyles and Waterstons have this as published 15th March - that is a familar date... So well done to Caliver on giving early-access! I shall be contacting them...

- Five Cannonballs????? 6lb or 24? I take it you are rating it in a positive way - not discharging the cannonballs from the cannons mouth? )

Yes ... Five cannon balls would be a top score. One cannon ball would be a little better than a damp squib.

"Fusiliers" is five cannon balls also.

I hate Mondays! Got to work. Got a call from the post room that a package was waiting. Collected it and opened it and....

due to a misunderstanding I'd got another copy of Prussia's Glory, which I'd ordered and received last month!

LBaO is on its way again today. I will get to start this book this week!

Cheers to Dave at Caliver for sorting it promptly.

Very promptly in fact. It was waiting on my desk when I got in this morning!

Thanks again to Caliver for excellent service.

Had email from Josh Howard as well - errata sheet - and he said that the print run of 4000 was nearly sold (3300) so congrats to him and Lawrence B.

Shall be reading this very very soon!
