Gentlemen;
I was wondering what we do with our ears whilst painting... is it radio, or music or are some people skilled enough at multi-tasking to watch TV with one eye and still paint?? I conceed that most TV does not require actual attention, but - apart from during undercoating perhaps - that is something I can't do...
If it is radio, is this spoken word or music?
Do we listen to 'talking books'? (Are 'Fusiliers', 'Long Obstinate and Bloody' or 'With Zeal And Bayonet' available in this format??)
If it is music, do we carefuly select 'appropriate' pieces to match the painting subject in question or do we merely reach for whatever we would have been listening to anyway???
Are there Painting-Time-Only musical selections?
Your responses to this most unimportant yet mildy diverting question are to be encouraged.

Music - as loud as I can get away with and definitely not period-related; the same stuff I've been listening to since my musical tastes formed in the late 70's and early 80's, with one or two more contemporary groups from the same genre.

I listen to movies on DVD. If I've watched the movie a couple of times, there's no need to actually look at the screen. I don't really listen either, I just like the background noise.

At work I've got a book-on-CD going, 32 disks of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Volume I.

Yours,
James D. Gray

Always have the TV on.
Can't really watch it but, for absolutely no scientific reason, I think it helps preserve my eyesight if I glance up regularly and focus on something not 12" from my eyes.

Paul

I listen to audio books while I paint; usually something to do with the period I am painting. Right now I am painting AWI New Hampshire Continentals and l am listening to Jeff Shaara's "The Glorious Cause"; part two of his American Revolution series. Ronan would not approve of these two patriotic novels, but they are great for period and painting inspiration.

Before that I listened to the first book; "Rise to Rebellion" while painting the Von Losburg fusiliers, Hessian artillery and command. Sometimes I just listen to any good audio book no matter what I am painting. I tend to prefer ficition when painting ... but there is some good non-fiction available too. The very best audio book there is: "The Religion" by Tim Willocks. No wargamer, worth his salt, should miss this book. By far the best read and listen, ever; period!

Mikeb:
Despite him being from Staleybridge - which is just outside Manchester - I knew nothing of Tim Willocks. I've seen the film of Swept From the Sea(apparently he did the screen-play based on the Joseph Conrad original) but the excerpt from The Religion on the publishers website (you managed to intrigue me) is the only thing of his I've read... You must be looking forward to Book 2 next year...
All:
With TV, I would be drawn to watch it regardless of how dire it was - unless I sat with my back to it... If there is a Test Match on I can listen to the cricket commentary, the fact that it lasts five days helps when painting something repetetive - like crossbelts... it makes the task in question seem smaller. But that is the only time radio would win over my-own-choice-of-music for painting accompanyment. If there ever happens to be a period connection in choice-of-music/panting-subject it is purely coincidental (rather than intended) my taste excludes a lot, but includes parts of the 1770's and 1870's as well as 1970's(etc) There are really only two types of music... Good and Not Good; the chosen disc is statistically more likely to be The Who than Wagner, but... I'm with Rudorf in that LOUDNESS is an asset!
The listening time available when painting is a HUGE hobby bonus! Even if we get less exercise with CD's than we did with vinyl Getting up every 75 mins instead of every 20...

Exercise is seriously over-rated, so I suggest an Ipod and docking speakers -I've got 6.15gb used on a teeny Nano which is 96 hours of music.

Couldn't agree more - and getting up once every four days to change the ipod must give you so much extra painting time! Jealous. Must get the new technology!

Indeed you should, as the beauty of the little marvel is that once you reach the end of the four day period, as long as you've hit the Repeat function, it starts all over again

Radio as you dont really need to pay attention as they repeat things so often you cant miss them !

Mainly Radio 4 Farming Today and the early morning News, then Radio 5 Live for even more news and live sports coverage

I have the tv running, usualy one of my many many tv shows I have on dvd.

my painting station is next to the pc, so I do a cople of colors or just one color, then hit the web just to check in anybody has said anything cool.

Then back to the painting, this way I can paint 4-8, 15/28/40mm figs a day.

Or close to 100 6mm.
