Well ! I have started my Jacobite army and this is going to be hard work.
I dont think they have come out to bad and I suppose I will get better as I paint more of them.
If anyone has any good tips on painting Tartan, I'm all ears..

The standards I had a go at myself and this was the result (Paintshop) they turned ot ok and just need a matt cote to take the glue shine of them.
The Gun needs the base dry brushing and flocking.
I have 4 more Highland units paint, a unit of Lowlanders, 2 x ecossias and 3 units of cavalry with 2 further guns.
All the flags I did are on my Blog, the ecossais were a real challenge..
Cheers

Love your Jacobites! I have always wanted to do this army (and the British) ... but plaids give me a painting-headache!

Looking forward to seeing more!

I painted 132 Highlanders to split between Covenant and Montrose armies years back.

It was a bit of a learning curve but here's a few things I picked up on.

Muted colours for the rear ranks, brighter colours for the front.
Hose and trews are always on the bias (cross) jackets (mostly and plaid are always straight.

Painter thicker stripes to begin with and then an over stripe either over the original larger stripe, or inbetween. Hose, jacket and kilt were usually of differing patterns, so you can line up a number if figures and use the same pallete with different designs, change the colour of the over stripes or other things to make it look more individual.

This kind of explains what I mean...

Avoid giving the highlanders white hose or putting white in the tartan set.
Single colour (muted) hose and plaid is not unheard of, but neither are patchwork plaids and I wouldn't like to have ot paint one of them..!!

Young men have often been ruined through owning horses, or through backing them, but never through riding them: unless of course they break their necks, which, taken at a gallop, is a very good death to die.

Hi Andy
Thanks for the reply and the information the patterns look great.
I would never have thought, and will be trying this out at once.
I have started working with thicker stripes on the second unit, and they are looking more varied.
Its a learning curve and I am getting better at them.
Once again thanks for the Tartan lesson.
Cheers
