Were Prussian Grenadier battalions in the Jena-Auerstadt campaign COMPOSITE battalions with the grenadier companies drawn from several different musketeer battalions? Or were they DEDICATED Grenadier battalions themselves (i.e., Grenadier Battalion Hahn at Jena was a whole grenadier battalion unto itself with all the same facing colours, etc.)? Thanks, Chris in Florida

The Grenadier companies of a regiment were normally in a permanent arrangement with those of another, even if it was really only in wartime that they physically came together - so half are in one facing colour, the other half in a different one.

I'll post some links in the other thread, but it bears repeating that the Hourtoulle book on Jena/Auerstadt is really handy if you can get hold of one.

Grenadier Battalions were composite battalions made from the grenadiers of two regiments. However, they could occasionally be built from the grenadiers of 1 or 3 regiments. I seem to remember that Hahn was a single-regiment battalion and was therefore half the normal size.

Tremendous Info!

Thanks RMD for the great Orbat! A quick question: Does "22/36 Osten Grenadier Battalion" mean that it was composed of Grenadiers from IRs no. 22 and 36? Chris

I'll answer for Mark - yes, it does, and Osten is the name of the officer (normally a Major) who commands it.

I should add that the increased strength of the Garde battalions (IR 6 & IR 15) is due to the fact that they do not appear to have detached their grenadier companies. However, it is possible that they did mass their elites, but it somehow wasn't recorded. It would be easy for them to do, as IR 6 had one grenadier company, while IR 15 had three grenadier companies, for a total of four grenadier companies.

I should point out that although the whole of IR 6 and III/IR 15 had the historical title of 'Grenadier', their centre companies wore hats in the field, while their grenadier companies wore grenadier caps. The whole units did however retain old SYW-era mitre caps for parades at Potsdam.

I don't! Not any more, anyway...

I was involved in putting on Auerstaedt with Mike Hickling at the AB Figures Wargames Weekend some ten years ago. The collection was mainly that of Mike Hickling, though I painted up a few brigades - the Garde, Oswald's LI, one of the line divisions and a few cuirassier regiments. The whole collection is now in the hands of one of our Scottish brethren.
