All, am contemplating Austrians as a future project, but would only start them if they could be multi-functional. That is, usable for 1800, 1805 and 1809. The god thing is that the cavalry, for the most part is pretty much the same uniforms throughout. What I wanted some thoughts on was the infantry headgear. I know that the helmet was just coming in in 1800 and phasing out in 1809, but can I get away with it for all three campaigns?

By 1809, I think all ranks except drummers wore the knapsack in the conventional way (ie slung from the shoulders); the exception was supposedly to allow the drummer to sling his drum over his shoulder on the march.

Just out of interest, what would have determined which of the German regiments were wearing the shako in 1809 (if any). Would it have been prestige/seniority - eg IR No.1 (or possibly IR No.4 who were all Masons - or so I've read)? Or the geographical location of their depot/inspection area?

The original shako - pre the 1811 regs was just a straight tube, so production was more in the east to supply the Grenzers. Hence why the Hungarians were next. It was really down to production. As the infantry gave their helmets up, the decent ones went to the German cavalry.

IR4 wasn't full of Masons or officers of the Teutonic Order - it was the Vienna Hausregiment (Guard regt), so it was just fashionable - like signing up for the British Guards.
