Hello,
I would like to share with you my Russian 1812-13 project I restarted recently. Like my Saxons I will add newly finished units into this 1 thread to keep them nice and tidy. 1st up I have just finished the 2 battalions of the St. Petersburg Grenadiers:

Paul,
Another fine looking unit for Mother Russia and your 200th aniversary project.

If Bryce wasn't so much farther along, you 2 could have had a competition on who finishes a Russian Division first.

Best of luck on your project though.
John

Thanks John, I think Bryce would win hands down as I jump about from nation to nation so much I think we will hit the 250th anniversary of the 1812 campaign before I get a full division finished!

I am slowly working my way through the Pavlov regiment so hopefully have it finished by the end of April (famous last words!).

Best regards
Paul

As only you can do them, Paul. There's something about the shakos on these ones I've noticed. Do you put a brown wash over the black? There's a very authentic looking finish to them.

Hi RDonny,
Thanks very much,

With the brown/black I have just recently changed my painting technique to try and get more done.

1st I undercoat the Russians in black then I block in all the base colours making sure no black shows through except shako, ammo box, back pack and shoes. Then I use the Army Painter dark tone (that's the dark brown you see) then I pick out the trousers, belts, flesh and fine detail as well as highlight the shakos with 2 greys.

I'm enjoying doing it RD and the finish is more like the 3 shade method than my original method.

I'm really happy with the finish and well spotted.

If I wasn't working so much I would have a lot more done, but then again it helps be buy my wee men too.

Best
Paul

Another little addition to my Russian army, finding time hard to come by at the moment:

Sorry for the delayed reaction Paul! I've been thinking of using that method myself having been prompted by wargaming chums to speed up production. A picture says a thousand words so I think I'll use that technique now only being a cheapskate I'll use my B&Q rosewood satin varnish diluted with water instead of the army painter. Thanks for sharing the technique.

Pavlov Grenadiers

Hi,
I have just finished my 1st battalion of Pavlov grenadiers to add to my AB Russian 1812-13 army:

My army is coming together very slowly but surely, an hour here and an hour there. I have the motivation but lack the free time however still enjoying painting my Russians.

Cheers
Paul

Hi, Paul..

This is an excellent work! Bravo!
Truly required paint quality for AB 18mm..

P.S. But with foot officer convertion You sadly made some mistakes.
Russian officers must be clean shaved and even Pavlov officers do not wear mitras but kiwers.

Take the Tea and come again tomorrow..

Hi Bryce,
Thanks very much, Really appreciate your comments! It has been a good while now we have been doing our Russians. Still a long way to go for me.

Hi Sho,
Thanks and glad you like them.
As to the mitre for the officer and the clean shaved officers. I just couldn't bring myself not to have an officer with mitre in the mix.

The way I see him, he is an old, long serving officer and his commanding officer has allowed him to keep his facial hair and mitre in regards to his bravery in earlier campaigns. How does that sound?

Best regards
Paul

Paul,
Good to see them completed and they came out superb as usual.

In my opinion anything was possible during this time frame, especially once they were away from their billets.

Paul,

In my little book, Uniforms of 1812; Napoleon's Retreat from Moscow, by Phillip Haythornwaite, on Plate 59 there is a "Company Officer, Grenadier Regt Pavlovski, full dress, 1813," wearing the "archaic regimental brass-fronted mitre" and he has a mustache!

This is Haythornwaite's mistake from year 1978.
Pavlov regiment officers did not receive mitras prior 1825.
There was very strict order, who and what type of mitras may wear.

Take the Tea and come again tomorrow..

Hi John,John,Sho,
No worries with the mitre and mustached officer. I knew before hand that there was most probably none in 1812-13 but could not resist the look. Interesting discussion though.

Sho sorry to say the main officer in my second battalion will have mitre also. Good news they won't be finished for a while ;-)

best
Paul
