Wondering if anyone could give some opinion on this, I found a debate about it on this forum back in 2004 started by Giles, the opinion then seemed quite favourable, the removal of lace was very helpful however the Continentals have bands round the musket barrels while the Brits don't. I was thinking of having a go at Burgoynes Saratoga campaign using the Short coated Continentals and a British light inf head, any thoughts would be great !

Many thanks,

Dave.

Dave,

The Land pattern muskets were fixed to the carriage with pins, rather than bands as used by most other European manufacturers, including the Dutch and French whose muskets were preferred to British ones by the Continentals. Not sure why the British used pins, exactly; they just did.

That and the greater variations in personal kit (backpacks etc) aside, there is no reason for not using Continentals as "unlaced" Regulars, or as Provincials (Loyalist regulars). The cut and style of the coat, and the use of overalls, were pretty much universal.

You should contact Alec at Front Rank and ask when he plans Saratoga British, as it would save you a lot of work if they are coming out soon (he's just released Continental riflemen, so the chances are they might be next on the list).

thanks Ronan, everytime I see Alec I bend his ear about doing 40mm Brits in campaign dress, I get the impression he isn't overly keen which given what he already produces I can't quite understand, I would have thought gamers/collectors would need more campaign style rather than the 1768 warrant types !
