Hi Chaps.
i am looking for some advise on
a) base size & figures/squadron, and
b) grading

of these troops having just purchased some Elite figures and had them painted to a splendid standard.

In respect of base size and figures/squadron - I note that these units were formed at the same company size as Guard units. However the 3rd regiment - the Lancers Eclaireurs - acted as light troops (cossacks/scouts/less regimented unit duties) or reinforced the Guard Lancers as the 4th/5th Company, and apparently they kept the shorter lighter cossack style lance rahter than the longer standard french lancers weapon.

My question then is should these troops rationally, in game play terms, be based AS Guard units, since they were RARELY used as formed combat troops with the Guard, at least before 1814 when they were incorporated totally into the Polish lancer regiment.

On the issue of grading for game play while the core troops were without doubt veteran Polish and Lithuanian lancers and cossack type scouts, the bulk were transferred line troops. Filed performance as formed regiemntal lancers was "questionable" at best in my opinion.
So how to grade?

My current opinion is to
1 - base on the same base size as my Guard Lancers so they can form into contiguous units
2 - base as Skirmishers not Guard (3 not 4 figures to a base)
3 - grade as 2nd class Line Cossacks

Any thought from the more experienced gamers, and historians is greatly appreciated.

hi there,

I have pm'd you some info on these and am digging out a book for you too.

Before I comment on the basing, just a couple of things; how many have you got? Was it 12? Are you happy to have a couple loose or with generals as vignettes like your others - ie do you want to use all of them in the unit?

The grading is interesting and also a movable feast in many respects; I shall dwell on it during my meeting with the accountants this afternoon.

See you later
